Position Description – Unit Counsellor
Objective or Purpose:
To provide leadership to female campers in a caring and positive environment; To help support, plan, and implement daily activities for a unit group and individuals while ensuring high standards of personal growth and safety are maintained; To assist with and be a part of staff team building and a positive enjoyable atmosphere for everyone
Qualifications:
- minimum 17 years of age
- experience working outdoors with children and/or teens in a leadership capacity
- the ability to lead a group, using effective problem solving and decision making techniques
- First Aid and CPR an asset
- the ability to work independently and as a part of the Kalalla staff team
- LIT training, leadership training or equivalent
- Outdoor camping experience (hard and soft skills)
Time Commitment:
- 12 day camp – 2 precamp training days and 10 camper days, including clean-up
- June weekend training
- Any in-city training, conducted by Camp Committee
Duties:
A Camp Counsellor at Kalalla
- has full knowledge of all emergency procedures; abides by camp rules
- shows discretion for camper/staff problems, cares for campers/staff safety, health and well-being
- upholds Christian philosophy and maintains professionalism at all times
- demonstrates respect for staff, campers and self
- comes to camp prepared with many games, songs, program ideas and much enthusiasm
- helps campers adjust to camp life, and uses basic team building techniques to make them feel comfortable
- plans daily unit program with input from campers including Vespers, out-trips, evening programs and other special programs
- supervises and helps with kitchen Jumping duties for her unit (Jumpers)
- plans and leads daily bible study(Discovery Time) which is provided by Camp Committee, additional guidance and resources are available
- attends ALL activities daily with unit to assist the resource staff, and provide safety and leadership, if necessary
- attends staff meetings and training provided at camp
- helps maintain quiet at the end of the day
- participates as much as possible with enthusiasm
- calmly, fairly and diplomatically resolves conflicts that arise
- communicates problems to the director
- works with LIT director to develop the leadership skills of the LIT's and provides written and verbal evaluation of LIT's time and experience with your unit
- participate and support the LIT's work with your unit (age restrictions LEGALLY do not allow LIT's only to be left in charge of a unit)
